STEVE VAI's 'Make A Noise Foundation' Awards Scholarships

March 23, 2003

Four aspiring music students who were previously unable to pursue their goals are now one step closer to achieving their dreams. Joel Oglesby, Jennifer Smallwood, Reid Chamness Karle, and Michael Hughey have all been awarded scholarships by the "Make a Noise Foundation" to attend Full Sail, a state-of-the-art Florida college offering degrees in recording engineering and entertainment media disciplines.

The "Make a Noise Foundation" was formed by Steve Vai in 1998 to provide funding for the creation and development of musical programs and education for those unable to pursue music and music-related activities due to limited resources. The scholarships, totaling $40,000, were donated to the "Make A Noise Foundation" during Vai's last tour. Steve opted to direct the funds to the foundation and partner with Grammys in the schools for distribution of the awards.

Vai, whose father sold his life insurance policy so his son could attend Berklee School of Music in Boston, looks to explore and promote all kinds of musical interests. "Music has too often been considered a luxury," says Vai. "I hope that 'Make A Noise' will keep or bring music in to the lives of those that otherwise might not be able to afford it."

Additional "Make a Noise" programs and awards will be announced in the near future.
